El nombre CEREC significaba originalmente CEramic REConstrution. Esta tecnología CAD-CAM fue desarrollada por el Profesor W. Mörmann y el Dr. M. Brandestini en la Universidad de Zurich en el año 1980. El primer equipo se comenzó a utilizar en pacientes a partir de 1985 en la misma Universidad de Zurich.
